Kazakh citizens lose seven billion tenge to internet fraudsters

Kazakhstan has recorded approximately 12,000 instances of Internet fraud since the start of the year, the official representative of Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs Shugyla Turlybek announced at a briefing. She added that Internet fraudsters caused damage worth seven billion tenge. As a result of police operations, 571 Internet fraudsters were detained and the activities of 17 criminal groups were halted. Experts calculated that Nur-Sultan, Almaty and Karagandy region account for the majority of the above-mentioned crimes. To protect citizens from fraud, the relevant ministry notified the population via SMS messages.

“Since the start of year, about 12,000 cases of Internet fraud have been registered in the country. A joint meeting with representatives of Kazakh Ministry of Digital Development and cell service operators was held on August 4, where it was decided to send SMS notification to the citizens. Due to the limitations of the mailing system, the number of characters in SMS texts is limited and the text message is shortened. Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs urges all citizens to be careful,” Turlybek said.
